Make Waze Your Default Mapping App on Pixel: Easy Guide

Tired of Google Maps? Here’s how to switch to Waze on your Pixel for a better driving experience.

Over the weekend, I reached my breaking point with Google Maps. It failed to start navigation, and the cluttered interface became unbearable. Frustrated, I opted for Waze on my Pixel 9 Pro—a navigation app I had previously enjoyed but had stopped using for some reason.

Why Opt for Waze?

Waze stands out thanks to its community-focused features. It offers reliable directions while keeping users informed about real-time traffic updates and road hazards, making it an excellent alternative for those unsatisfied with traditional mapping applications.

Challenges with Setting Waze as Default

You might think making Waze your default map is a breeze, but recent changes to Android have complicated the process. In past updates, you could simply install an app and select it in the default apps section. However, with the latest Android version, this option has become less accessible.

Steps to Make Waze Your Default Navigation App

  1. Install Waze: First, go to the Google Play Store and download Waze.
  2. Access Settings: Launch your Settings app.
  3. Find Apps: Tap on the Apps option. If Google Maps isn’t right at the top, click on ‘See all apps’ to view the full list.
  4. Select Google Maps: Scroll down and tap on the Google Maps entry.
  5. Disable Google Maps: You will see a Disable button; click it to deactivate the app, making it unresponsive.
  6. Set Waze as Your Default: At this point, Android should recognize Waze as the only mapping tool available. To test it, try opening an address from a calendar event or another app, and Waze should launch automatically. If prompted, be sure to confirm it as your default app.
  7. Add Waze to Android Auto: To use Waze within Android Auto, you’ll need to add it to your launcher. Navigate to Settings > Connected Devices > Connection Preferences > Android Auto. From there, customize the launcher to include Waze for better access while driving.

A Smoother Driving Experience Awaits

After following these steps, you’ll be all set with Waze as your primary navigation app. Say goodbye to your frustration with Google Maps and enjoy a community-centric navigation experience. With real-time traffic updates and insights from fellow drivers, you can hit the road with newfound confidence!
