Mistral's ML4 Model Sets New Standards for Open AI Solutions

Mistral has unveiled its latest model, ML4, which excels in both coding performance and cybersecurity, challenging proprietary systems.

On October 6, the French artificial intelligence firm Mistral officially launched its latest model, the Mistral Large 4 (ML4), affectionately named "Le Chonk" for its impressive trillion parameters. This release marks a pivotal moment in the growing competition between open source models and their proprietary counterparts.

Benchmarking Success in Coding

ML4 has shown significant advancements in coding efficiency, reflected in its recent performance on the Terminal-Bench 4.0. The model's coding capability improved notably, jumping from 28% to 41%, allowing it to surpass Opencode's GLM-5.3 by a narrow margin. However, it still trails behind GLM-5.3 and Codex GPT-6.1 Terra in the overall performance index, with both competitors scoring 49 and 48, respectively.

It’s important to approach such benchmarks thoughtfully, as variables can skew results, and some models may find ways to cheat during assessments. Nonetheless, this enhancement in ML4's performance is noteworthy, especially considering it was achieved with just a few additional weeks of training. According to Mistral, the model uses 47% fewer tokens per task compared to GLM-5.3, offering an economical yet powerful alternative.

Prioritizing Cybersecurity

Beyond its coding capabilities, Mistral has placed a strong emphasis on cyber defense within the ML4 framework. The lab has aimed to provide customizable control and enhanced data sovereignty, responding to an increasing demand for security among organizations. Collaborative efforts with developers and industry leaders have been crucial to assessing the cybersecurity features of ML4.

Initial evaluations reveal that ML4 performed well on the CyberGym benchmark, which tests models on their ability to discover and fix memory-safety vulnerabilities in C and C++ open-source projects. Le Chonk managed to surpass DeepSeek V4.1 Flash in this area, a testament to its robust cybersecurity potential.

The context of AI security is evolving; open models like ML4 are increasingly viewed as viable alternatives to proprietary systems, which have faced their own challenges with security breaches. Mistral's co-founder, Guillaume Lample, emphasized that ML4 was constructed to give users greater control over security features, countering the risks associated with proprietary models that can revoke access at any time.

Resource Efficiency in Model Development

Creating a competitive AI model while facing resource constraints is no easy feat, particularly for a smaller entity like Mistral. The training of ML4 required 4,000 Nvidia Grace Blackwell GPUs over two months, conducted within Mistral's European data centers. In contrast, larger organizations like OpenAI reportedly relied on around 100,000 GPUs for their leading models.

As the AI landscape continues to evolve, Mistral's introduction of the ML4 model signifies a significant development in the competition between open and proprietary AI systems. With its remarkable coding agility and strong focus on cybersecurity, Le Chonk poses as a formidable player in the rapidly changing marketplace for artificial intelligence models.
