Vurt’s Bold Move: Elevating Vertical Videos to TV Screens
Vurt is reinventing vertical videos by introducing dedicated apps for smart TVs, aiming to enhance viewer experience with rich features.
Revolutionizing Vertical Content
As streaming giants like Disney Plus and HBO Max dive into vertical content, a new contender, Vurt, is shifting the narrative by taking vertical videos to the big screen. With a growing interest in platforms like TikTok and Instagram, the demand for engaging content in vertical formats is clear. Vurt aims to capitalize on this trend by offering a unique viewing experience that moves beyond mobile devices.
A New Approach to Vertical Viewing
Unlike other platforms that focus exclusively on mobile experiences, Vurt has launched its dedicated apps for Apple TV and Android TV. This strategic pivot allows viewers to access a whopping 3,500 episodes from more than 100 shows right on their televisions. Since its launch in March, Vurt has rapidly expanded its user base from 10,000 to an impressive 675,000.
The content offered predominantly consists of dramatic microdramas, similar to what is found on platforms like DramaBox. However, Vurt distinguishes itself by relying on productions created with real actors and crews, as opposed to AI-generated content. Moreover, Vurt’s ad-supported model allows users to enjoy content for free, eliminating the hassle of microtransactions.
Listening to Users: The Key to Success
In a recent conversation with Vurt cofounder Hilmon Sorey, he shared the driving force behind their move to develop dedicated smart TV apps—feedback from users. They expressed a desire for a seamless method to project the vertical content they enjoy on their phones to larger screens.
“Initially, we created a casting feature for smart TVs,” Sorey explained. “However, we realized we could leverage the technology in smart TVs to deliver a superior experience with HD and 4K video quality.”
Supporting Creators: A Collaborative Effort
Vurt is committed to empowering content creators through fair agreements. By signing licensing deals that allow a 50/50 revenue split, Vurt ensures that independent creators can easily submit their projects for distribution on the platform. Once approved, new content can be available for streaming within days. This collaborative approach is a cornerstone of Vurt’s philosophy, as they prioritize fairness and responsiveness to creator needs.
Sorey emphasized the importance of ethical monetization practices, stating, “Platforms that rely solely on original content without compensating creators often complicate the experience with unnecessary gamification.”
A Compelling Future for Vertical Content
Vurt’s timing aligns with a broader trend; established platforms are exploring ways to extend their vertical content reach. Instagram, for example, recently expanded its TV app to include vertical Reels and other formats, aiming to compete with YouTube's dominance. However, Vurt remains steadfast in its commitment to vertical content while also venturing into original series and live sports events.
In preparation for their TV app launch, Vurt consulted with content creators about their viewing preferences. Many reported a strong preference for immersive experiences on larger screens, which confirmed that vertical microdramas could be just as compelling on a TV as they are on mobile. Sorey remarked, “Vertical storytelling creates a unique engagement, even on widescreen formats that provide different storytelling dynamics.”
Engagement and User Experience
While some may question the appeal of vertical videos on larger screens, early results indicate that Vurt’s model is resonating with audiences. Users are spending more time engaging with content via Vurt’s TV apps, likely due to the convenience of a larger display.
Ultimately, while Vurt caters to fans of microdramas, the question remains: Is there a wider audience ready to embrace vertical videos in a more spacious viewing format? As more streaming platforms test the waters of vertical content, Vurt appears poised to lead the way in redefining how audiences interact with these unique narrative styles.
