President Trump has threatened to sue the BBC for $1 billion after a Panorama programme was edited in a way his team says was damaging. In a letter to the corporation, Trump’s lawyers demand that the BBC ‘immediately retract’ the episode, calling the edited segment ‘false and defamatory.’
The controversy follows an apology from BBC chair Samir Shah, who said the edit represented an ‘error of judgement’ and that the corporation was considering how to respond to the legal threat. The fallout intensified after a leaked memo criticised the 2024 Panorama programme about the US president; BBC director-general Tim Davie and BBC News CEO Deborah Turness resigned on Sunday night amid the row.
On Newscast, hosts Adam and Chris were joined by Chief Washington Presenter Caitriona Perry and Media and Culture Editor Katie Razzall to discuss the story and its implications for the BBC and international reporting.
