Chemical Burn Incident at North Carolina Chili's Leads to Reopening

A Chili’s restaurant in North Carolina has reopened after an incident where customers were harmed by a cleaning chemical mistakenly used in margaritas.

Restaurant Recovers from Mishap

A Chili’s Grill & Bar location in Forest City, North Carolina, resumed normal operations after a troubling incident that affected both customers and staff. Three patrons and two employees suffered chemical burns after consuming margaritas that had been unintentionally mixed with a cleaning chemical.

Incident Details

The alarming events unfolded shortly after 11 a.m. on October 26, as patrons began placing their lunch orders. Reports from the Foothills Health District indicated that the customers experienced immediate discomfort following their first sips of the drinks, prompting concerns about the safety of the materials used in their preparation.

After the customers reported their reactions, two employees also tasted the drinks and noted similar symptoms. As a result, the restaurant was temporarily closed to allow for an investigation.

Investigation Findings

Health inspectors discovered that an unlabeled container, mistakenly believed to hold sugar, actually contained a granulated degreaser. An employee had received this chemical from a contractor who was cleaning the exterior of the establishment and had improperly stored it inside the bar area.

The following day, the restaurant was allowed to reopen after health inspectors confirmed that all concerns had been addressed and no further violations were found. Fortunately, no fines were levied, and the investigation was concluded. While the affected individuals received medical treatment, there has been no update regarding their current health status.

Chili's Response

A spokesperson for Chili’s clarified that this incident was isolated to the Forest City location and stressed that the company took swift action to address the situation. They stated, “Our team supported those affected and worked to prevent further incidents. We carefully reviewed what occurred and have implemented necessary changes specific to this location.”

Despite the spokesperson’s assurance, there was no clarity provided on the discrepancy between the number of those injured reported by the restaurant and the health department.

Safety Measures Moving Forward

This unfortunate situation raises important awareness about food safety protocols and the significance of effective labeling within food preparation areas. Given that Chili’s menu prominently features margaritas, usually rimmed with either citrus or sugar, it becomes essential to ensure that all ingredients are distinctly marked to prevent such mix-ups in the future.

As the Forest City Chili’s resumes normal operations, both staff and patrons hope for better vigilance surrounding food safety to avoid any similar incidents going forward.
