Haley Stevens Endorses Mike Rogers, Shattering Party Lines in Senate Race

Rep. Haley Stevens publicly endorses GOP candidate Mike Rogers, shaking up Michigan's Senate race.

In a surprising shift, Representative Haley Stevens, a Democrat from Michigan, has officially endorsed Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers. This endorsement comes in the crucial final days leading to a competitive election that could sway the balance of power in the Senate.

A Drastic Decision

Stevens shared her decision on Sunday via a brief video, expressing that she feels unwelcome in the campaign of her party's nominee, Abdul El-Sayed. “Hey, Michigan, as you may have seen, our Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate, Abdul, said that I was no longer welcome in his campaign and that I should stay away. And he’s right, and that’s why I am endorsing Mike Rogers for the United States Senate today,” she stated.

This announcement marks a significant change from her earlier commitment to support El-Sayed, with whom tensions escalated after the two released contradicting statements about an advertisement that Stevens called antisemitic. Instead of agreeing to denounce the ad, El-Sayed accused Stevens of revisiting a primary fight that ended three months prior.

Growing Tensions

Following the back-and-forth, El-Sayed’s campaign requested that Stevens refrain from attending further campaign events. During her announcement, Stevens pointed out El-Sayed’s associations with recent controversial figures, stating her opposition to these connections and emphasizing that her support for candidates must align with her values.

“A dear friend of mine earlier today was saying that education is the ballot, and she’s absolutely right. And what our students see, what our children see, and who we are as Michiganders is not hate,” she added, reaffirming her identity as a proud Democrat.

Response from the GOP and Democrats

Mike Rogers responded to Stevens’ endorsement with enthusiasm, stating he was “honored” to have her support. He characterized the public discourse as a stand against religious intolerance, highlighting recent instances of antisemitism that have threatened the safety of Jewish individuals in Michigan.

Conversely, the reaction from Stevens’ Democratic colleagues was swift and severe. Curtis Hertel, chair of the Michigan Democratic Party, formally announced that Stevens would no longer be recognized as part of the Democratic Party. A wave of resignations from her congressional office followed, with her chief of staff Justin German expressing shock and disappointment over the endorsement.

He stated, “Many members of our team have resigned, including myself. We encourage everyone to exercise their civic duty, vote for Abdul and Democrats up and down the ballot.”

An Uncertain Road Ahead

Stevens' decision has sparked anger among Democratic supporters of El-Sayed. Notable leaders, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Michigan’s own Senator Elissa Slotkin, have publicly reinforced their backing for El-Sayed, asserting his commitment to middle-class working families over the corporate affiliations of his opponent.

As both candidates prepare for the upcoming election, with 2 million votes already cast in Michigan, the implications of Stevens' endorsement remain varied. Will this shift in alliances alter the perceptions of voters? Analysts are monitoring the situation closely as the election approaches.
