Dolly Parton, the legendary country musician, has died at the age of 80, her family announced on social media.
“Sadness lies with us, not with Dolly,” her nephew Brian Seaver said in a video announcement.
Across a career that stretched over seven decades, Parton earned 10 Grammy Awards, sold more than 100 million records worldwide, and wrote upwards of 3,000 songs.
She always placed songwriting at the center of her work, calling it her primary identity. “It’s my way of expressing myself,” she said, adding, “It’s my therapy.”
Parton was also a shrewd businesswoman who made bold decisions to keep control of her career. With a sharp wit and southern charm, she shaped a show-business legacy that spanned more than 60 years.
