A powerful earthquake struck Japan’s Kyushu island on 28 July, forcing more than 150,000 people to evacuate their homes. The tremor caused widespread disruption across the region.
The quake knocked out electricity to many areas, damaged roads, brought down part of a castle wall and destroyed a footbridge. More than 40,000 households are reported to be without power.
Police told public broadcaster NHK that several people are missing after a chimney collapsed at a paper factory in Kumamoto prefecture. Emergency teams are responding and authorities are continuing to assess the extent of the damage and carry out search and rescue operations.
