The BBC chairman has apologised, calling it an ‘error of judgement’ in the way a speech by Donald Trump was edited for an episode of Panorama.
On Sunday the corporation’s director general, Tim Davie, and its news chief executive, Deborah Turness, resigned after a leaked internal memo criticised the documentary.
But this controversy did not arise overnight. As the BBC’s Analysis Editor Ros Atkins explains, the episode is tied to longer-standing issues within the organisation rather than a single isolated mistake.
